For golfers who take lessons

Lessons That Stick

UnBogey makes sure that your golf lessons are remembered and stick in your brain. This way you're ready to execute what you learned on the course.

How a week works

The coach runs 1 and 7. We run 2 through 6.
  1. 1LessonYou arrive with the goal and your current swing thought already written. The coach starts from the learner, not from zero.
  2. 2JournalWhat was taught, in your own words, within a day. Not the coach's words. Yours.
  3. 3Teach it backExplain the change out loud as if to a friend. If you can't, that's the gap, and now you know where it is.
  4. 4RetrieveBefore you touch a club, recall the swing thought cold. Then ten balls with it. Rate the match 1 to 5.
  5. 5PracticeOne drill, designed for the change, done to mastery rather than to tired.
  6. 6ReflectWhat held, what didn't, and the one question to bring to the next lesson.
  7. 7LessonThe coach builds on something that's still there.

"I could feel the lesson was good. I just couldn't tell you on Thursday what it was for."

Every golfer we've talked to, more or less. It isn't a memory problem. It's a design problem, and the six days after a lesson were never designed.

Lessons That Stick is for you if

  • ✓You take lessons at least every two weeks, anywhere in San Diego, from any coach, on grass or in a sim.
  • ✓You'll give it ten to twenty minutes a day. Phone in hand is enough for most days; a club for two of them.
  • ✓You'd rather know one thing cold than ten things vaguely.
  • ✓You're willing to tell us, bluntly, where the week breaks. The founding cohort is how we learn.

It isn't for you if

  • –You're looking for swing tips. We don't give any, and we'll never second-guess your coach's method.
  • –You don't have a lesson booked. The week is built around a real one; book it, then join.
  • –You want an app today. The week runs on your phone now through email and the web; the app comes when the cohort shows us what it should be.

What you get each week
DAY 1
A one-page prep note before your lessonYour goal, your current swing thought, your own diagnosis, and what you've tried. You hand it to your coach, or we send it ahead if they've joined.
2 to 6
One short practice a day, on your phoneJournal it, teach it back, retrieve it cold, one drill to mastery, reflect. Each day tells you exactly what "done" means. You rate the match, 1 to 5.
FRI
The Teaching ReportOne idea a week on how golfers actually learn, numbered, so you can start at No. 1.
DAY 7
You walk in with it still thereJournal, match ratings, one question. Your coach builds on something that exists instead of starting over.
The science, in one minute
1thing at a time. Working memory under pressure holds about one. Ten ideas means you keep the last one said.
24his when most of a lesson is gone if nothing retrieves it. Day 2 exists for that reason.
8/10at the easy version before anything gets harder. A criterion beats a feeling.
6spaced touches between lessons beats one long range session. That's spacing, and it's the oldest result in learning science.
Questions golfers ask
Does my coach have to be involved?

No. The week works with any coach, including one who's never heard of us. If your coach wants in, they get the prep note before each lesson and a short read on what held. Most coaches like it; it makes their hour easier.

What if my lessons are in a simulator?

Fine. Several practices are designed for a bay, and a few need nothing but your phone and a quiet minute.

How much time is it, really?

Days 2, 3 and 6 are five to ten minutes with no club. Days 4 and 5 are twenty to thirty minutes at the range or a bay. If you can't make a day, you skip it and say so. We'd rather know.

What does it cost after the founding cohort?

Founding members stay free. Later cohorts will pay a monthly fee that's a fraction of one lesson, because the point is to make the lessons you already pay for work.

Who's behind this?

Piers Blyth, a science teacher in Coronado who has spent fifteen years on how people learn and took golf lessons that didn't stick. Nobody on the team will touch your swing.
